Public Sector, Autumn 2026, by Kathy Young
In the first of four articles marking the 90th anniversary of Hāpai Public, formerly the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand, I spoke about the organisation’s change of name in 2025. I explained that the new name, Hāpai Public – the Institute of Public Professionals, draws on the meaning of hāpai in te reo Māori, to lift up or support others, and that we very deliberately changed it to be about the people. The article traces the organisation’s contributions since 1936. They include the first tertiary qualification in public administration, the Public Sector journal, the Public Sector Excellence Awards, and its role as a critical friend of the public sector.
